Falcons to be banded and named Monday

WESTON, WI  (WSAU)  -  A batch of baby birds will have their own special party Monday afternoon.

Peregrine Falcon chicks hatched in a nest built high up at the Weston power plant about two weeks ago. WPS’s Kelly Zagrzebski says the school children that named them will be able to watch as leg bands are attached. “We’ve got four chicks that will be banded and officially named this afternoon. Greg Septin will be here. He’s with the Wisconsin Peregrine Falcon Foundation and does a lot of the research and studies on all of the different falcons throughout the state of Wisconsin.”

The bands help researchers keep track of the birds, such as where they travel, when they mate, and where they will nest.

There is a very small window of time when researchers can attach the leg bands. “We have to get in there between, I think, 15 to 17 days, otherwise they’re starting to work on learning to fly and the chances (to band the birds) are less.”

The students, families, and teachers will be at the banding ceremony starting at 2:00 p.m.
