Bear mauls Northwestern Wisconsin man Monday night

SHELL LAKE, WI (WSAU) -  A rural Shell Lake man was attacked by a black bear in his yard Monday night. Department of Natural Resources officials say Jerry Brown was doing yard work on his rural property, about 7 miles west of Shell Lake, barely into Burnett County.

DNR Wildlife regional Supervisor Mike Zeckmeister says the bear attacked Brown after attacking Brown’s dog. He says the family tried to scare it away. “It was shot at by his brother trying to scare it away. To the best of our knowledge, the bear was not hit by any of the shots. We did not find any blood or hair, so at least we’re not dealing with a wounded bear, which would have been even worse.”

Zeckmeister says they have taken some precautions to help the Brown family, if the bear comes back. “We do have a bear trap at the property, and we’ve also issued a shooting permit to his brother.”

This is a very active time of the year for hungry bears. Zeckmeister says there are things you can do to prevent bears from coming onto your property and causing damage or injury. “Don’t have any food on the ground. Bears are looking for food this time of year, especially with the late spring. Be very careful with any kind of waste food, like, (things) that would attract bears in a compost pile and that kind of stuff.”

Brown was taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition has not been released.

Zeckmeister says attacks by black bears on humans are very rare.
