Bishop To Visit Vikes Today

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (LEARFIELD-WSAU) Desmond Bishop will try to join his former Green Bay teammate Greg Jennings in Minnesota. The Vikings are the linebacker’s first scheduled free-agent visit today, after the Packers cut him yesterday.

The 28-year-old Bishop was a starter on the inside when a severe hamstring injury forced him to miss all of last season. In the meantime, Brad Jones improved his play after moving to Bishop’s spot from his old position at outside linebacker. And the Packers are reportedly willing to go with Jones and A-J Hawk at the two inside spots this season.

Bishop said he hoped there would be room for three starters on the roster, but he knew deep down there wouldn’t – and he’s not surprised he’s the odd man out. There were reports since the April draft that the Packers were looking at trading him.

This week, there were new reports that the Pack would cut him if he didn’t get his contract re-structured. He said he would be open to a smaller deal with the Packers if he doesn’t get picked up in free agency.

For now, Bishop gives up two remaining seasons on a four-year, 19-million-dollar deal. He was a sixth-round draft pick in 2007. During five active seasons, Bishop had nine sacks, seven forced fumbles, 13 pass break-ups, and one interception.
