Public comment open on DATCP proposal to increase pesticide usage on ginseng

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - Ginseng farmers are being asked to weigh in on a change to how a certain pesticide can be used on their crops.

The special registration proposed by the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will allow ginseng farmers to use more Bravo Weather Stik on their ginseng than is labeled for on the bottle. DATCP spokesperson Donna Gilson says the pesticide attacks a number of diseases that infect ginseng while it's still growing. "A fungus called Alternaria that can blight stems, blight leaves, and there's another disease called grey mold too."

Under current regulations, farmers can only apply 16 pints of the pesticide per acre per season. That's because ginseng is not one of the labeled plants on the pesticide. Gilson says the state would like to allow farmers to use up to 28 pints per acre. A previous request of this nature was approved in 2010, but wasn't needed the last two years because of the dry growing seasons.

Preliminary estimates show the special regulations would not require a full environmental impact statement from the state or from farmers.

Comments received on or before 4:30 p.m., June 25, will become part of the preliminary environmental assessment record.
