Ed Sheeran Gets Stage Named After Him at Hometown Music Festival

Ed Sheeran won't be able to perform at his local music festival back home in England this year, but he'll still be there in spirit: according to the BBC , organizers have named one of the festival's stages after him.

Ed played at the event, called Ipswich Music Day, back in 2009 and 2010.  In 2009, he was well-known locally, but hadn't become a worldwide star.  By 2010, he was already getting some attention, after having traveled to the U.S. and receiving support from Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx.   He hasn't been back since, but the festival has chosen to honor their hometown boy made good by renaming the same stage on which he performed the "Ed Sheeran Stage."

Ed told a local news site, "It's great to show Ipswich Music Day my support in this way and I feel very privileged to have been asked. It’s an amazing event.  I remember playing [there] a few years ago and it was great fun...I hope musicians and fans have a fantastic time."

The festival, scheduled for July 7, is expected to draw about 40,000 people. Now in its 22nd year, it's one of the biggest one-day, free music events in the UK.  On that same day, Ed will be taking a break from the Taylor Swift tour to play at a multi-artist event in Indianapolis, Indiana.
