Mass casualty exercise at Wausau West Friday

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Don’t be alarmed by a large number of emergency vehicles at a Wausau school Friday morning. Police and emergency response teams will be at Wausau West for a training exercise. Between fifteen and twenty agencies will be simulating a mass shooting episode, and practicing their response techniques. This training starts at 8:00 a.m. in the auditorium and lasts until approximately 1:00 p.m.

Last October 5th, police and Wausau West High School experienced a real threat and protected students with what’s called a “soft lockdown.” That’s when officers were searching for Marcos Garza, who had threatened to enter the building and start shooting after a fallout with his ex-girlfriend who attended the school. This training exercise will be different, as it will deal with a subject who actually creates a threat inside the school.
