UNDATED (WSAU) - Winter is almost over, so that means the next season is road construction season. Highway work never really stopped this winter, but the new warm weather projects are getting started one week from today.
Wendy Arneson from the Department of Transportation says three bridges on I-39 will have extensive reconditioning done. They are the Fox Glove Road bridge in Rib Mountain, County Highway C bridge , and the Highway 34 bridge.
Arneson says the Highway 34 bridge is getting a new deck, which will require closing one lane most of the summer, along with other repairs. With the Highway 34 bridge limited to one lane, it will be impossible to exit northbound I-39 to turn left onto southbound Highway 34 towards Knowlton. The detour will take travelers to Highway 153 at Mosinee and send them back to 34 on the southbound lanes. Arneson says light vehicle traffic from I-39 coming from Stevens Point can exit at Highway DB and enter Knowlton from the south as well.
There will also be some lane closures on Highway 29 just west of Wausau Monday (3/11) and some night only Highway 29 closures starting next Monday to accommodate work on the new County Highway O interchange.
