HURLEY, WI (WTAQ) - Someday, people will be able to walk or bike on a trail that stretches 925 miles from the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan border at Hurley to Detroit.
But 45-year-old Chris Hillier of Taylor Michigan won’t wait. He plans to walk the entire proposed route – or as close as he can along highways and public rights of way.
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder proposed the new trail last November. It would start at Belle Isle Park in Detroit and run across both the lower and upper peninsulas to Ironwood Michigan at the Wisconsin border.
The Michigan DNR plans to meet next month with trail groups and community planners about the route and construction. They’ll look for private groups to maintain various sections – and they still need a name.
Nancy Krupiarz of the Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance says it’s fantastic what Hillier plans to do. She says it “excites the imagination.”
