ST. CROIX COUNTY, WI (WSAU) - A man accused of killing his three young daughters in River Falls has changed his plea to guilty but insane.
35-year-old Aaron Schaffhausen made that plea to the judge today after a day long hearing on evidence and trial motions. The plea will mean prosecutors won't have to prove guilt in the case, but that defense attorneys will have to prove that Schaffhausen was mentally incapable at the time of the crime.
Prosecutors said he killed his daughters – ages 5, 8, and 11 – last July after he slit their throats during a visit. He was divorced 13 months ago and moved to Minot North Dakota – and his wife allowed Schaffhausen to see the kids alone when he returned to River Falls last summer.
Jury selection in the case has been scheduled for next week in St. Croix County Court.
