Memorial project in Marshfield nears completion

Marshfield Veterans Memorial
Marshfield Veterans Memorial

MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) Veteran’s Parkway in Marshfield will soon be home to a memorial, dedicated to our fighting men and women. City council president Mike Feirer is one of the memorial’s driving forces, and he says that when done, the memorial will feature hand-painted murals depicting each branch of the service, an array of flags, and even an anchor and a howitzer cannon. According to Feirer, “When it’s done, ‘Fallen Warriors’ is what it’s going to be called.” Feirer and alderman Tom Buttke came up with the idea of using the foundation from an abandoned warehouse on Veterans Parkway for the base of the memorial, and Feirer says, “the idea took off from there, and it even saved the city $12,000 by not having to demolish the old slab!” The first phase of the project should be done in time for Memorial Day, but an official dedication would probably wait until Veterans Day when the memorial is 100% complete. Kris Leonhardt is the artist on the project, who donated her talents free-of-charge, and says she’s, “eager to see the finished product.”

Funds are still needed for the memorial, which is expected to cost a total of around $6,000.

If you’re interested in helping fund the project, including ongoing maintenance of the memorial, checks should be made out to the “American Legion Memorial Fund,” and designated to the Veterans Memorial Project, c/o Associated Bank, 400 S. Chestnut Ave, Marshfield, WI 54449.
