County considers stray cat cuts

by

WAUSAU, WI  (WSAU)  -  Marathon County is considering a cut to stray cat funding.

The county’s Impoundment Task Force recommends that the county stop paying for the care of stray cuts from taxpayer dollars. That task force proposed tapering off the funding over the next three years. This plan would have the county pay the Humane Society of Marathon County about 70-thousand dollars a year for stray dogs, which they have legal authority to collect dog license fees for. There is no such authority to make municipalities pay a portion of a cat license to the county.

The task force plan would give the shelter 60-thousand dollars for cat care next year, 30-thousand dollars in 2015, and no payments after that. The county’s Finance and Property Committee will discuss it today at 3:00 p.m.

While the county tries to get a handle on animal costs, they are negotiating a new contract with the Humane Society of Marathon County which has funding shortages of its own. Wausau City alderman Keene Winters says it’s possible these issues can be solved if the new plan for pet licensing and online tracking of vaccinations used in Wausau, Weston, and a handful of other municipalities were expanded county wide.
