MINERAL LAKE, WI (WSAU) - The company that wants to build an iron mine in northern Wisconsin has applied for an exploration license.
The Department of Natural Resources received an exploration license application from Gogebic Taconite, for use in the Penokee/Gogebic deposit in Ashland and Iron counties.
Ann Coakley with the DNR says the agency will review and make a decision on the application within 10 business days. That’s the time frame outlined in the new mining law.
The ore deposit is about 21-miles long, running from Lake Gogebic, Michigan, to Mineral Lake, Wisconsin.
