MANITOWISH WATERS, WI (WSAU) - A tanker truck full of gasoline and a van crashed, closing Highway 51 in Vilas County this afternoon. The crash happened at about 1:00 p.m. at the intersection with Highway H near Manitowish Waters.
Sheriff’s officials say the tanker did not flip over and the 5000 gallons of fuel did not ignite, but the tractor has extensive damage after jackknifing and sliding partially into the ditch. The van flipped and landed in a marshy area just off the road.
Both drivers were hospitalized. One of them was flown from the scene by helicopter.
Initial reports say the van driver failed to obey a traffic sign while traveling east on Highway H and crossed into the path of the northbound semi tractor and tanker trailer.
