Activists to attend mine protesting camp in Northern Wisconsin

ASHLAND, WI (WTAQ) - Up to 90 activists will attend a workshop in northern Wisconsin this weekend to learn what organizers call “peaceful resistance techniques” in protesting Gogebic Taconite’s iron ore mine.

The Central Wisconsin Action Camp issued a statement Wednesday about the training session, which begins Friday at a site in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

Organizer Thistle Petterson of Madison said the protestors will learn anti-oppression training, direct action training, blockades, and tree climbing techniques – things that can be hurdles to Gogebic’s advance work at the proposed mining site in Ashland and Iron counties.

Casey Martinson of the Action Camp said mining opponents learned from the former Ladysmith mine that opponents must show their strength early, before the mining company spends a lot of money on their project.

Gogebic Taconite has asked the DNR for permission to do exploratory drilling at the mine site.
