SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WSAU) -- One of Wisconsin’s most unusual homicide cases is back in the news. The death of Teresa Helbach near Mishicot on Halloween of 2005 still has unresolved issues.
The victim’s family had filed a civil wrongful death suit against Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey. That suit had to wait for the criminal trial and the appeals to be completed. Now, the wrongful death civil suit is moving forward as the murder trial is done and the appeals have been exhausted.
The civil case has been assigned to Sheboygan County judge Angela Sutkiewicz. No new court dates have been set, but a scheduling conference will be held November 25th.
Avery is presently incarcerated in the state prison at Boscobel. He has already been convicted of murder, mutilating a corpse, and illegally possessing a firearm. Dassey is in the Green Bay Correctional Center, convicted of homicide, mutilating a corpse, and sexual assault.
The lawsuit filed by the Helback family is seeking unspecified monetary damages.
