"Glee" Returns, Goes Gaga -- and Katy Perry Too

After going on hiatus following its heartbreaking tribute to Cory Monteith , Glee returns Thursday night with much lighter fare.

Tonight's episode, "A Katy or a Gaga," focuses, as its title suggests, on the music of Katy Perry and Lady Gaga .  It also introduces special guest star Adam Lambert as a new character who calls himself "Starchild."

The plot is set in motion when Will tells the New Directions members that they'll be competing at Nationals against a group called "Throat Explosion," who are known for "living and performing on the edge."  This makes all the kids insecure, so Will challenges them to step out of their comfort zones and tells them to perform the music of Katy and Gaga.  The catch is that if they think of themselves as more of a "Katy" type of singer, they need to perform a song by Gaga, and vice versa.

Meanwhile, in New York City, Kurt decides to start his own band with Rachel, Santana, and Santana's new girlfriend Dani, played by Demi Lovato, to join him.  When he holds open auditions, Adam, as Starchild, shows up and blows everyone away with his over-the-top performance, leading Kurt to worry that he'll be overshadowed by the new guy if he lets him join.

You'll hear performances of "Marry the Night," "Wide Awake," "Roar" and "Applause" during the episode, which is also a spoof of on the mostly media-constructed rivalry between the two singers that happened earlier this year.  In reality, both women get along fine with one another, though their fans are another matter.

Glee airs Thursday night at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
