MERRILL, Wis (WSAU) A charter school in the Merrill School District doesn't meet state standards, and may not qualify for additional funding. The state's Department of Public Instruction notified the district of problems with the Bridges Academy last week.
A DPI letter says Bridges Academy operates more as a resource center for home-schooling than as an actual school. The school has until December 2 to come into compliance, or it will lose $5-million in state funding. There are more than 700 students enrolled.
The Bridges Academy offers curriculum guidance and instruction to parents, and access to a certified teacher if their children need additional help. The state says Bridges doesn't meet state education requirements because parents do most of the teaching, and most of the instruction occurs at home.
Merrill School District officials say they'll meet with the state to discuss ways to bring the charter school into compliance.
