Veterans Day services at Highground

NEILLSVILLE, WI (WSAU) -- The Highground Veterans Memorial Park near Neillsville is calling this year’s Veterans Day event a “Celebration”. Volunteer general manager Kirk Rodman says, that’s because it’s not just about those who died for their country, but also about vets who are still here for us to appreciate and thank. Rodman said that’s especially true for veterans of the Vietnam War who were rudely treated when they returned from overseas, and Rodman says, “They’re still here and they’re a part of us.” There’ll be something new this year, 149 empty white chairs, one for each service member from Wisconsin killed in the Middle East. Rodman added that he’s, “challenging the people that come to bring flowers and fill those chairs with flowers.” The names of service men and women who have died in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and The Persian Gulf war will be read aloud by the public, starting at 12 Noon. At 3:30 there will be a raffle drawing for a patriotic-themed quilt and an elk antler carved as a flying eagle following the ceremony. The Veterans Day Celebration at The Highground will take place starting at 3:00 on Monday, November 11, on Highway 10 just west of Neillsville.
