WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – A new maintenance facility for the Wisconsin National Guard is under construction in Wausau.
The new facility in property on the city's north side will house one of the National Guard's new vehicle readiness facilities. 1st Lieutenant Joe Trovato says the new building replaces an outdated location on 17th Avenue. "It'll allow us to maintain the readiness of our forces throughout the state and be able to service vehicles and other equipment as needed."
Lieutenant Trovato says the building will feature new bays and new equipment to replace what was quickly becoming an inadequate workplace. "Six workbays, lifts, cranes, wash equipment, basically things that will let us service our specialized equipment." The old maintenance facility on 17th Avenue no longer met OSHA standards and had no room to get larger vehicles inside. It also had inadequate locker room facilities and didn't properly accommodate for female soldiers.
Lieutenant Trovato says work is now underway. "They broke ground in September, and right now they are in the midst of site work, doing some grading, and laying that initial foundation before the building starts to go up."
The new facility is built on formerly private land in the Town of Maine. The city of Wausau allowed the annexation of the property back in 2010.
