Amherst woman charged with causing death with vehicle... again

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - An Amherst woman was in court Monday for her second case of causing a death while driving.

23-year-old Hanna Schacht is charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle, plus the matching charges for homicide and causing injury for driving with a prohibited blood alcohol content of point-15.

Schacht is accused of driving nearly 70 miles per hour on Buelow Road in the Town of Lanark Sunday September 15th, and striking a car leaving a driveway. 31-year-old driver Richard Wetzel was taken to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah with serious injuries. His 51-year-old father Daniel Wetzel died at the scene.

Schacht was convicted in 2012 in Woodstock, Illinois for driving at high speed after her friend tried stealing marijuana from a drug dealer. The dealer was riding on the roof of the car and fell off. He later died from head injuries.

If convicted on all counts, Schacht could spend 75 years in prison. She remains jailed in Portage County, unable to post a $100,000 cash bond. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 10th at 10:30 before Judge John Finn.
