Abuser of infant going to prison

RHINELANDER, Wis. (WSAU) - A Rhinelander man has been found guilty of child abuse after injuring an infant he was paid to babysit for.

Christopher Schimke entered into a plea agreement yesterday, where prosecutors dropped the repeat offender enhancers and dropped a charge of strangulation and suffocation. In return, the court found Schimke guilty of child abuse with a high probability of great harm and 2nd degree recklessly endangering safety.

Schimke could have received seven years in prison, but instead will end up with one year in state prison followed by four years of extended supervision with no unsupervised contact with children.

The judge also ordered Schimke to submit a DNA sample, attend anger management counseling, and alcohol and other drug assessments.

Prosecutors say Schimke first claimed he accidentally hit the baby with a video-game controller. Schimke later told police he briefly tried to choke the boy because the child wouldn’t stop crying. The child’s mother called police when she noticed bruises on the baby’s shoulder, cheek, and ear in April of 2012.
