State senate approves property tax cut

MADISON (WRN)   The Wisconsin Senate passed Governor Scott Walker’s $100 million dollar property tax cut proposal on Tuesday. Senator Tim Cullen (D-Janesville) one of five Democrats who voted against the measure, which he said is designed to help Governor Scott Walker get reelected. “A hundred million dollars of property tax relief. Nice headline,” Cullen said.

The tax cut is scheduled to take effect in time for December bills and is estimated to lower property taxes on the typical home by $13 dollars this year and $20 next year.

“I think this bill is significant,” said Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau). “It’s a hundred million dollars in property tax relief that will be welcome. Because if you’re like my family, that is not something you look forward to, that bill you receive every December.”

The Senate approved the bill 28-5. The fast-moving measure, which was introduced last week and passed out of the Joint Committee on Finance earlier Tuesday, now moves to the Assembly.
