Mayer guilty in plea deal, no additional prison time

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - The former Stratford area man once convicted of causing his girlfriend’s death was set to have a new trial starting Monday, but instead entered into a plea agreement.

32-year-old Eric Mayer admitted slapping Cynthia Tyler in 2010, which caused her to die from what experts claimed was a ruptured artery in her head. Defense attorneys were planning to argue a second possibility for Tyler’s cause of death, which prosecutors would have had difficulty contesting without a key piece of evidence from Tyler’s autopsy that was either misplaced or destroyed.

Mayer plead no contest to an amended count of felony murder from domestic abuse. Judge Michael Moran sentenced Mayer to a total of eight years, with the first 19 months in prison and the rest of the time on extended supervision. A credit of 585 days already served in prison means Mayer will not have to go back to prison. He also had to pay various court costs and restitution totalling just over 76-hundred dollars.

The court also approved Mayer’s relocation to Outagamie County, with his probation to be handled there.
