Stevens Point schools levy jumps to maximum allowed

by

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - The city of Stevens Point didn’t raise the tax levy, but across town, the School Board did.

Stevens Point school district residents will be paying around $30 dollars more next year for every $100,000 worth of valuation.

The budget passed Monday night is slightly more than 101-million dollars, with a school tax levy of 33-point-5 million dollars. That puts the tax rate at $8.89 per $1,000 worth of equalized property value. That is the maximum levy amount allowed by state law.

The district is projecting a 3-point-4 million dollar deficit for the present school year, and they plan to cover much of that with general fund revenues. The deficit was due to the cost of staff pay increases, textbooks, and the just-started expansion at Plover-Whiting School.

The district has received $35-point-37 million dollars in state aid, which is a decrease of $673,000 or 1.87% based on 7,528 students in the district.
