Marshfield Clinic previews new Stevens Point facility

STEVENS POINT, Wis (WSAU) - A major regional medical provider is opening a new location next week in Stevens Point. The community had a preview Tuesday night of the new Marshfield Clinic. The 55-thousand square foot medical clinic will allow Marshfield Clinic to move some of their specialists out of St. Michael’s Hospital, and add several other providers and specialists.

Jim Peterson is the Operations Manager for the new Marshfield Clinic facility. He says it unlike any other structure in the Marshfield Clinic system. “It incorporates a design concept called On Stage and Off Stage. The On Stage side is where our patients and our customers come through, and they’re the highlight and the most important aspect of our operations. It’s a more efficient design to increase collaboration and quality as a matter of the visit.”

Dr William Benn is anxious to join the new facility. He says the rooms are made to get people out of the lobby and into your care teams faster. “In the winter when it’s cold, and you’re sick and don’t want to be in the lobby with everybody else, they get to go to a room right away.” He adds, “The scales are in the room, so nurses don’t have to go and get them. They can do more important things in the room. We’re right there. The team station is right behind the exam room doors. They come in one door, we come in the other door, so we’re right there right away, so everybody’s time is used more effectively.”

Peterson says the Marshfield Clinic electronic records system will allow several specialists, such as several pediatric experts based at Stevens Point, to serve a large geographical area through technology.

Dr. Benn says that same technology along with efficient building design will save his team and patients valuable time. You don’t have to be looking for a chart. You can see the results rather quickly from any clinic in the Marshfield system, so there’s less wasted time. You get answers more quickly to the patients and things are stored more quickly.”

The new Marshfield Clinic location is across from Stevens Point Airport on Highway 66 and Stanley Street next to Interstate 39. The 18-point-5 million dollar facility will open for service November 4th.

They will offer family medicine and over 20 specialties including cardiology, dermatology, nephrology, ophthalmology/optometry, oral surgery, podiatry, rheumatology, physical therapy, lab and infusion therapy, allergy, endocrinology, orthopedics, obstetrics/gynecology, plastic surgery and urology. Several pediatric subspecialties not previously available north of Madison will also be located at the Stevens Point clinic.

Completion of the new clinic is behind schedule. It was held up while the Department of Natural Resources studied if a protected butterfly’s habitat was endangered by the project.
