Police offer last minute Halloween safety tips

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Trick or treating continues tonight for most of the area, and local police are offering reminders to help keep kids safe while they're out hunting candy.

Kids heading out to trick or treat should take care to be safe about their costumes. Wausau safety officer Maureen Pilsner says kids should be be careful about masks. "You want to be able to look left and right, check for curbs, check for traffic. Especially when it starts to get dark earlier."

Pilsner says parents should keep thinking about safety when they're moving herds of kids from block to block in vehicles. "Obviously they still need to keep an eye on the kids, but now you're in an environment than you're used to. That's where it's critical that they have lighting like flashlights or glow sticks or something else so they can see."

Once the kids are home, make sure to check your child's candy. Pilsner says you should do a sweep of your child's candy before they eat it, especially if the child has food allergies. "That's where the parents really need to be vigilant. If they know their child has allergies, they have to double check where that was manufactured and what's in it." She says it's safer to stick to pre-packaged candy, and inspect all homemade goods or fruits.
