MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - Deer season is approaching and the Department of Natural Resources wants to help you find a shooting range to sight in your weapon.
The DNR has a released a new online map to find your local public ranges. Hunting coordinator Keith Warnke says the new map is searchable and interactive. "You'll see them on the map, and you can click on the little target that denotes each range. That'll pop up the county location, the name of the range, a phone number, the address."
A number of those ranges are local to Central Wisconsin, and Warnke says you've got a number to pick from. "You've got the Corbin County Forest Range just west of Wausau. There's the Athens Shooting Range, there's the County Forest Range at Dewey, which is right nearby."
The state has been seeing a large expansion in the interest of shooting and hunting, and a number of new ranges are being constructed. Warnke says tax money taken from guns and ammo sales goes into the projects to build these public ranges. "So we're putting the money that comes from hunters and shooters, shooting, right back into building a quality place for them to shoot."
