WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WSAU) - Element Mobile has a new owner and a new name.
AT&T Mobility filed paperwork with the FCC to announce they'd be taking primary ownership of the company. Element was created in 2011 to take over the former Alltel operations in Central Wisconsin. Media reports say that AT&T has purchased approximately 60 percent of the company and plans to rename it Lake Mobility.
Element had trouble as a new company and was the subject to a number of consumer complaints about billing and service that lead to a $248,000 settlement with the Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection last year.
The full transition to AT&T's ownership is still subject to FCC approval and could take up to a year to complete.
AT&T says it will continue to honor most contracts that customers currently hold with Element after the switchover.
