Barbara Walters Apologizes for "Shading" Katy Perry -- Sort Of Adult Contemporary

Katy Perry raised a few eyebrows recently when she claimed, in her Billboard magazine cover story, that ABC's Barbara Walters scolded her quite harshly for showing up late to an interview.  On Monday's edition of The View , Walters responded to Katy's accusations, and offered an apology...of sorts.

Katy originally told Billboard  that when she sat down with Walters, she "shouldn't have done the interview...I knew the end of my marriage was coming" and she was "exhausted and stressed."  She said she'd told her team she'd be late, but Walters showed up at the original time, and was kept waiting.  "When I got there, I apologized immediately," Katy recalled. "But then she said to me, 'You know, I've only ever waited for one other person this long, and you know who that person was?   Judy Garland .  You know how she turned out, right?'"  Walters was referring to Garland's death at age 47 after battles with drugs and alcohol.

Katy didn't seem too upset by what Walters said, however.  "I think it's the coolest thing that Barbara Walters shaded me.  I just couldn't tell her as we were sitting down for a mega-interview, 'Hey, my marriage is falling apart.  Give me a break,'" she tells Billboard.

On The View on Monday, Walters said she didn't remember being quite that hard on Katy for her tardiness.  "What I remember was that she was very late...I probably did say, 'Y'know, I waited a long time for you like Judy Garland.'  Would I ever say, 'And you know what happened to her?' Never!"  She then pointed out, "When you do an interview, you don't know if somebody's marriage is good."

Walters concluded by saying, "Katy, if I made you feel at all unhappy during a time where you were obviously unhappy, and I didn't know, I'm sorry, but you can't always know!"
