NEKOOSA, Wis. (WSAU) -- This weekend is your last chance to land the big one as Nekoosa Walleye Days comes to an end.
Organizer Jay Stone says this could be the best time of the year to get a fish thanks to the spring thaw. "We're getting a lot of water flow now, they're opening a lot of gates, they're drawing a lot of water down, which is bringing the fish out. We're going to see how today turns out, we've got the contest going right now."
Stone says the high water levels on the river will flush out some big walleyes. "If the water really gets up high, then they got to get into those back eddies and flat currents. I'm sure they're going to find several fish in those locations." The fishermen who bring in the biggest walleyes for registration will be in the running for some excellent prizes.
This weekend will be a great one for the kids. Stone says Saturday is the Kids Contest. "We've got our kids contest on Saturday at Jerry's BP in Nekoosa. Starts at 8 and goes to 3. We've got Ronald McDonald making an appearance to greet the kids at 7:30 to 8 in the morning. 200 kids under 16 will get free goodie bags and a bucket of minnows, and we'll send them off fishing."
