ANTIGO, Wis. (WSAU) -- A former deputy sheriff found guilty of sexually assaulting a teenaged girl is going to prison. 26-year-old Michael Brayton was a Langlade County deputy, but that ended after he had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

Brayton entered into a plea deal, where his 22 felony charges were reduced to just one, which he pled guilty to.

During his sentencing Friday, Brayton apologized to this teen victims, though they were not in court to hear it. He also apologized for tarnishing the reputation of the Sheriff’s Department.

Defense attorneys called upon three character witnesses including Brayton’s girlfriend and a minister that spoke about Brayton’s changes since the arrest. Prosecutors didn’t agree, and asked the judge to give an appropriate sentence of 11 years behind bars. Marathon County Judge Michael Moran gave him 3 years in prison and 7 years on extended supervision, which surprised observers in the gallery. Brayton will also have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
