MERRILL, Wis (WSAU) Lincoln County prosecutors say they'll be filing charges against a Merrill teenager who lied about having cancer and collected donations from several area businesses. WSAW-TV reports an indictment against Celina Winchell could be filed by the end of the week. She's already charged in Marathon County with obstructing a police investigation and theft. A friend who thought she was sick put out collection jars. Winchell allegedly used the money for clothes and cigarettes. One of the businesses because suspicious and contacted police.
Other collection jars were put out at businesses in Merrill.
Several of Winchell's Facebook postings claimed that she'd developed lung cancer and couldn't afford her treatment.
Prosecutors are also considering additional charges against Winchell's father. They believe that he emptied some of the donation jars and put the money in his bank account. He's already charged with theft by deception, and is free on $2,000 signature bond.
