WEYAUWEGA, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wisconsin State Patrol troopers arrested a man wanted in Florida for a sex crime. State Patrol Sergeant Terrie Johnson says 59-year-old Gary Baldwin of Jacksonville, Florida was found in his semi tractor trailer rig right after dropping off a load of fire safety equipment at Paris Manufacturing in Weyauwega. “We had received information from the Jacksonville, Florida Sheriff’s Department that there was an over-the-road truck driver that they knew was going to be in the Waupaca county area, and they requested that we apprehend this subject on a felony warrant. He was wanted for attempt to solicit the sexual battery of an 11-year-old child.”
Florida officials didn’t tell Wisconsin troopers the details of the alleged crime.
Johnson says the information from Florida advised them when Baldwin would be arriving at the Weyauwega business, but even arriving early, troopers almost missed him. “He was expected to deliver his load around 11:00 a.m., so we got people in place, and it turned out he had actually gotten there a little bit earlier and was leaving the facility and had already dumped his load when a traffic stop was made on the individual, and he was taken into custody without incident.”
After Baldwin was arrested at 10:07 a.m., the truck was left at an area truck stop. Johnson says the truck was then searched at the request of Florida officials. “A search warrant was obtained, and a search of the tractor was done, and there was a cellular telephone that was specifically noted in the warrant that we did confiscate and take into evidence for Jacksonville S-O (Sheriff’s Office).”
Baldwin is currently in the Waupaca County Jail awaiting extradition to Florida to face the charges. It is unclear when Florida officials will arrive to take him back.
