"Silver Alert" program begins

by

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- You’ve probably heard of the Amber Alert program, where authorities can quickly spread the word about missing and possibly abducted children. Starting today, there’s a similar program to help locate other vulnerable people.

It’s called the Silver Alert program. Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen calls it an important resource to help find an adult with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other cognitive impairments when they’re missing. Just like Amber Alert, Silver Alert messages will go out by email, texts, and faxes to media and subscribers to help locate the missing person more quickly.

Anyone can subscribe to the Silver Alert or Amber Alert programs through the Wisconsin Crime Alert Network and receive the messages through cellphones and computers. Silver Alerts may also be broadcast through television and radio, digital billboards, and lottery display terminals. You may also see the messages on highway digital messaging signs operated by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
