City seeks proposals for Edgewater Manor site

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- As of Tuesday, Stevens Point officials are officially looking for potential developers that may wish to acquire the Edgewater Manor senior housing property.

The riverfront property was built as a subsidized housing project, but since the federal Housing and Urban Development funds have gone away, Stevens Point officials are entertaining possible redevelopment options.

Community Development Director Michael Ostrowski says they are advertising for potential developers now.  “It will be on our website, as well as sent to other sites, especially the League of Municipalities and classified ads, and was sent to area developers as well as individuals who have submitted bids prior on the property.”

Stevens Point officials had put out a request for proposals before, but the last effort to get out of the senior housing business drew a lot of opposition. Ostrowski is hopeful they can attract good proposals.  “I think we’ll get a good mixture of responses with the ability to think a little further on the property, and maybe do a few different other uses. We may get a few different RFP’s in this time.”

Ostrowski says Developers only have 60 days to submit proposals to the city.  “They’d be due October 1st, and then we’d take them to the Redevelopment Authority in October for review. Depending on their action, we’d then take it to the Common Council if they would decide to move forward with one of them.”
