TERRE HAUTE (PROVIDED TO WSAU) Plover won its first game on Thursday, at the American Legion baseball Great Lakes Regional tournament on the Indiana State University campus in Terre Haute , Indiana, by defeating the host team 8-1. Plover jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning and two in the second. Terre Haute's only run came in the 3rd. Plover added a run in the fifth and two more in the 8th. Ryan Makuski, Mitch Mallek and Cal Giese each had three hits for the Black Sox. And Mallek and Giese each drove in three runs as well. Austin Schulfur got the win, pitching eight innings, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out five and walking three. Plover will face Galesburg, Illinois on Friday night. Galesburg beat Marshfield in the second game of day Thursday 14-7. The Post 54 Blue Devils struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the 2nd inning. Galesburg scored one in the bottom half of that inning, to make it 2-1 through four. Each team scored one run in the fifth inning, before Marshfield took a 6-3 lead with three runs in the 7th. But in the bottom of the 7th, Marshfield reliever Mitch Susa gave up four runs on three hits without recording an out. He was replaced by Jeremy Binder, who didn't fair much better, giving up three more runs in the 7th and four more in the 8th. Susa took the loss, after Drew Spaeth pitched the first six innings, scattering nine hits while giving up three runs. For Marshfield offensively, Nathan Dupee, Mitch Susa, Alex Brostowitz, Sam Klein and Trevor Schwecke each had two hits. Marshfield plays Terre Haute in an elimination game Friday at approximately 11:30 a.m.
