Groups taking part in the Cold Water Challenge

UNDATED (WSAU) -- Over 100 kids were soaked with ice cold water as part of the Ice Bucket Challenge. The challenge has become a huge fundraiser and awareness tool to fight ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

The Boys and Girls Club of Portage County accepted the challenge from their Wisconsin Rapids counterparts, and the buckets were emptied at 3:00 p.m.

Pam Somers is a local resident of Stevens Point who is living with ALS. She spoke to the Boys & Girls Club Plover Unit about her challenges and personal experiences of having this disease before the chilly fun began. She said, “You are supporting myself and everyone else with this terrible disease.”

One hundred fifty buckets were donated by the local Lowe’s store for use in the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Another area group got involved in the Ice Bucket Challenge this week. The Wausau Police Department had several officers and staff members participate Wednesday. They had some help from the Wausau Fire Department, which used a ladder truck to spray the cops. The police issued their challenge to the fire department and other police departments.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has raised millions for research to fight ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
