Man shot by Plover police officer in attack held on $100,000 cash bond

by

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- The man who was shot by a Plover police officer is being held on a high cash bond.

A $100,000 cash bond was set for 33-year-old Brett Lieberman of Manawa on Wednesday. He faces a charge of attempted first degree intentional homicide for allegedly charging at a cop with a knife before being shot by the officer.

Police say Officer Andy Hopfensperger attempted to stop Lieberman on Highway 54 between Locust Drive and Maple Drive for erratic driving on August 8th. Lieberman jumped out of his pickup truck and went after officer Andy Hopfensperger with a knife. That’s when Hopfensperger shot him with his service weapon.

Lieberman had been hospitalized for treatment of the gunshot wound, but authorities are not disclosing which hospital or when he was released to police custody.

An initial appearance for a charge of attempted first degree homicide is scheduled for September 2nd at 1:30 p.m. before Judge John Finn in Portage County Circuit Court.
