WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Several road projects will impact travelers in central Wisconsin starting today.
First of all, Highway 51 north and southbound will be briefly closed three times a day much of this week to allow crews to blast rock in the construction zone. The closures will happen between Decator Drive and Bridge Street in Wausau at 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. Motorists can expect delays from 5 to 20 minutes each time.
Travelers will also find it a little more difficult to travel to the Cedar Creek mall business district starting today. Construction crews are starting a year-long Business 51 project between the southbound I-39 on ramp and Eagle Nest Boulevard. Expect single lane closures until Labor Day. For now, the I-39 ramps will remain open, but expect a detour to get to the mall and other Cedar Creek area businesses starting September 8th.
The 12-point-2 million dollar Cedar Creek project will require Business 51 to be reduced to one lane most of the time while crews reconstruct all I-39 and Business 51 interchange ramps, reconstruct Business 51 between Village Way and Eagle Nest Boulevard, realign Morrison Avenue with the southbound I-39 ramps, and reconstruct the Cedar Creek bridge. When completed, there will also be a multi-use path along northbound Business 51 from Village Way to Stoney Rivers Drive.
Early stages of the work will focus on the Business 51 corridor from Eagle Nest Boulevard to the southbound I-39 on ramp.
Bridge repairs will also cause lane closures on Highway 51 at Highway 64 in Merrill and I-39 at Highway 73 in Plainfield starting today and lasting until Thursday afternoon.
