Gun rights advocate released from jail

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- The Wausau man known for supporting the right to openly carry a gun is out of the Marathon County jail.  No charges were filed against 24-year-old Derek Simonsmeier.

He was arrested along with 32-year-old Danny Price, 25-year-old Shannon Wheeler, and 26-year-old Amanda Zastrow after the three armed men got involved in a dispute between two roommates Wednesday.

Earlier in the week, Simonsmeier wrote a guest editorial for the Wausau Daily Herald newspaper about gun rights, and described an incident at a Wausau retailer where he was asked to conceal the gun.

Wheeler had a conceal carry permit, but has been ordered to surrender the permit and his weapons because of the arrest and a charge of pointing a shotgun at one of the house occupants. He will appear before Judge Michael Moran February 20th for a pretrial conference.

Zastrow is listed as the owner of the house, and could be charged with being party to the crime of intentionally pointing a weapon at occupants of the house. Price has also not been charged yet.
