MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- An Antigo credit union joined 20 groups honored on Wednesday for their work in promoting financial literacy.

Covantage Credit Union was given the award at a special summit with the Governor. Rhinelander School teacher Patrick W. Kubeny was also honored. “Through their work to advance the cause of financial literacy, these worthy individuals and organizations are positively impacting the lives of thousands of people in communities across Wisconsin,” said Governor Walker, who hosted the recipients in a ceremony at the Capitol. “Personal financial literacy is an important skill that can substantially improve the quality of life for people of all ages.”

But that's not all that the state is doing to help promote better understanding of personal finance. State financial literacy director David Mancl says part of the money the state collects in settlements goes to towards finiancial literacy programs.  These programs work hand in hand with the Department of Public Instruction. "We work with the Department to make available some funding for school districts to enhance financial education in schools."

Though 20 groups and people were honored, Mancl says other groups can get funding to help out. "We also have a grant program that is happening, and people can apply for these grants up until March 21." You can find out more about the grant program online at the Department of Financial Institutions Website.
