Wausau seeking proposals for impounding stray cats

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wausau is accepting proposals for sheltering stray cats. Lieutenant Matthew Barnes says the city has arrangements for dogs, but nothing else. He says the impoundment, care, treatment, and humane disposal of stray cats and non- dog animals is needed. “The reason for the proposal is to get multiple bids, so that the city is being responsible with the taxpayer dollars when we spend it for sheltering of stray cats.”

Barnes says that future provider of services could be in the Wausau area, but it could be farther away. “As far as the distance from the City of Wausau, we have not set a mileage requirement, however, that will definitely play into our decision on who to award the contract to.”

It’s entirely possible that Wausau will receive proposals from private kennels or other counties capable of managing stray cats and maybe other non-dog pets. “Several of the surrounding counties, including Marathon County, have expressed an interest, and we’ve had conversations with them regarding them providing the service to us. If another county can provide the service to us at a cheaper price, including the transporting of animals to their location, that’s absolutely a possibility.”

Proposals must be received by Lieutenant Barnes by noon on Friday, March 7th. The proposals will be opened by the Board of Public Works at their March 11th meeting. The full request for proposals (RFP) is available at the City of Wausau’s website
