MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- One of the candidates for Wisconsin Attorney General was once the prosecuted, and not the prosecutor. Brad Schimel’s campaign confirms he was cited for drunken driving in May of 1990, twenty four years ago.
Darrin Schmitz is Schimel’s campaign consultant, and he says the 48-year-old Waukesha County District Attorney admitted his mistake, plead guilty, and took responsibility for his actions. Since then, Schmitz says Schimel has prosecuted many drunk drivers.
Schimel is reluctant to support criminalization of first-offense drunken driving. He believes that would jam the courts and also cause forfeitures to flow to the state instead of the local municipalities.
