Van Doren to challenge Kind in 3rd Congressional district

MAUSTON, Wis. (WSAU) -- A Mauston man is going to try doing something that hasn’t been done in over seventeen years.

Ken Van Doren is a former Mauston City Council member and retired building contractor running as a Republican, and trying to unseat incumbent Democrat Ron Kind of La Crosse for Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional district. Kind has held the seat since 1997 when Steve Gunderson left office.

Van Doren is making his announcement in a series of stops, which include the Portage County Library in Stevens Point at 11:00 a.m. Friday. He was in La Crosse and Eau Claire Thursday. The conservative candidate has criticized Washington’s actions he claim often violate the Constitution. Van Doren also believes Obamacare should be voluntary for patients and providers. He is critical of incumbent Ron Kind’s support of what he calls failed values and policies.

Steve Gunderson and Ron Kind are the only two people to hold that seat since 1981. In Wisconsin’s history, 10 Democrats and 17 Republicans have represented that district.
