Milwaukee County supervisor wants to close courthouse on MLK Day

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - The Milwaukee County Courthouse stood out Monday by being open during Martin Luther King Day -- and at least one County Board member wants to change that.

Supervisor Khalif Rainey said county officials should close on King Day, just like Milwaukee's City Hall, and local governments and schools in many of Wisconsin's larger areas.

County employees are entitled to a day off for King Day -- but they can "bank" it and use it any time during the year, so the offices can stay open for constituents. Milwaukee County employees can bank up to five holidays throughout the year.

Rainey says it dishonors the memory of King, the civil rights leader who was killed in 1968.

Martin Luther King Day has been a federal holiday since 1986, and a state government holiday for almost as long. Rainey says local communities should, "honor Doctor King in the manner he deserves."
