MEQUON, WI (LEARFIELD-WSAU) The State Amateur golf tournament begins today in Mequon, and the top two players from a year ago won't be there -- defending champion Jordan Niebrugge and Charlie Danielson.
The 20-year-old Niebrugge from Mequon is taking a rest. That's after he tied for 27th at the P-G-A's John Deere Classic and then made it to the Round-of-16 at last week's U-S Amateur Public Links Championship. Niebrugge is resting up for next week's Western Amateur in Chicago, where he won the title a year ago.
Danielson, of Osceola, is also sitting out after making the Round-of-32 at the Public Links tourney.
That opens the door for 168 others this week. Among the main contenders are state Match Play champion Josh Udelhofen, U-S Amateur qualifiers Nick Nelson and Brandon Cloete, public links contestant Kyle Henning, and Jake Wisniewski -- who won the Ray Fischer tournament at Janesville this month. The State Amateur runs through Thursday at Ozaukee Country Club.
