Safety Day Camp shows children several safety topics

MERRILL, Wis. (WSAU) -- A special program to teach children about the dangers around them is coming up next week in Merrill. It’s called Safety Day Camp.

Nurse Heidi Duley of Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center in Merrill says skilled speakers from a variety of fields cover different topics in a way children can easily understand.  “Safety Day Camp is a one day that we’ve been offering to kids for the last twenty years, actually. It’s for ages between 8 and 11, and we vary it through the years, but there’s 8 safety topics that we cover during the day, and it goes one step farther than we learn in school.”

Duley says they vary the topics from year to year.  “This year’s topics are safety with dogs, bullying, gun safety, highway safety, lawnmowers, oral health, railway safety, risks of drugs and smoking, and water safety.”

One of the popular topics is operating lawn mowers safely, and getting an introduction to how dangerous the power tools for outdoor work can be.  “Joe Stellato from Shawano County’s Extension comes, and he shows them proper gear to wear.  He brings, in addition to lawn mowers, weed whackers, chainsaws, everything, and hearing protection. (He discusses) where the cutting blade is and how long it takes to stop. Just important things to the kids don’t get hurt.”

Safety Day Camp is a free program Tuesday, August 5th at the Merrill Area Recreational Complex. July 28th is the last day to register by calling Duley at 715-539-2195.

The program is a joint effort of Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center, UW-Extension, Lincoln County Farm Bureau, Merrill Parks and Recreation, and has several local businesses and organizations supporting it.
