STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- Farm Technology Days will be hosted by Portage County in just over a month, and the media got a preview Tuesday. The event will be August 12th, 13th, and 14th at the Blue Top Farms and Feltz Family Farms, located just east of Kohl’s, Lowe’s and Walmart in Plover.
Executive Committee Chairperson Sara Brish says they started planning over three years ago, and a lot of people have worked on 19 different committees to prepare. “We’ve had a great team from the very beginning. We’re very blessed to have great leaders in this community, and through that, we’ve developed relationships and really worked well and really hard to make sure we have a successful show.”
The Feltz family’s operation focuses on dairy cattle, and the Zakrzewski family’s Blue Top Farms focusses on vegetable crop production. Brish says their neighboring farms are involved, too. “In addition to our co-hosts, we also have other farmers who are contributing in other ways. They’re planting some of the field demonstration crops on their properties as well, so it really is a team effort.
Field Demonstration Committee member Paul Cieslewicz says modern farm machinery is much different than it was just a generation ago. “Absolutely, it’s changed over the years. The machines have gotten bigger, more capacities to get in there, get the job done, and get out, so it’s a lot different than seeing what was done forty years ago.”
The show is usually held in July, but Portage County moved it to a later date due to vegetable crop production. “We did move it back, and also with that moving back, we knew that we’d have potatoes or other vegetable crops that have already been taken off, so we’re going to have tillage also that we haven’t seen in many years at this show.”
Farm Technology Days is hosted by a different county each year. Portage County last hosted the show 32 years ago. Dane County will host the 2015 event.
