Common Core supporters, opponents in Marshfield

MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAU) -- The discussion about Common Core educational standards drew a large crowd of opponents and supporters to Marshfield Wednesday night.

While a Republican sponsored bill to roll-back Common Core curriculum faced sharp opposition in Madison on Thursday, a local event in Marshfield opposing the federal education standards is being called a success by its organizers.

Dr. Duke Pesta, Academic Director of “Freedom Project Education” spoke to what is being described as a full house of more than 100.

Besides sharing his first-hand experience with what he called, “the harm done by Common Core,” Pesta provided a counterpoint to State Superintendent Tony Evers who released a YouTube video on Wednesday in support of Common Core. According to Pesta, “We have Common Core in Wisconsin because of Superintendent Tony Evers. He single-handedly brought it to Wisconsin. They’ve never been voted on anywhere. Simply by fiat, and Tony Evers made Wisconsin the very first state in the union to take Common core.”

Marshfield resident Sid Johnson said that even with the highly-charged topic, no incidents of harassment occurred, and described the more than 3-½ hour discussion as “well-mannered and highly-informative”.

Organizers say the event drew parents, educators, and administrators from around Central Wisconsin.
