WESTON Wis. (WSAU) -- The warm weekend does not mean you can shut off that water faucet quite yet.
Several municipalities issued orders to run a small stream of water from one of your house faucets during the bitter cold early February temperatures due to the large number of water mains that were freezing.
Public works directors are urging homeowners and businesses that were told to run water to keep doing that until they are notified. That’s because the frost was down around eight feet in some areas, and even though it’s warm on the surface, it’s still frozen deep down in the soil.
Utility operators say it may take several weeks to warm the ground enough to get rid of the frost at that depth.
